Tackling homelessness

Sir, – I despair when I read the advice given on homelessness by a former government adviser (Liam Cahill, Opinion & Analysis, August 18th). The advice given is to look at amending the Constitution. This is classic displacement activity.

The answer is for the Government to initiate a massive publicly funded house-building scheme. Decide to do it, and then act aggressively to get it done. Act aggressively to get the Government’s hands on landbanks (using tax policy), act aggressively to get planning permission, and act aggressively to get the houses built. The advice from this non-government adviser is that if you want houses, you build them. It’s as simple as that. – Yours, etc,
