Sport and concussion

Sir, – Sports-related concussion has been the subject of editorials and letters in your newspaper over the past year. An important announcement was made last week in Scotland whereby a single set of shared guidelines on concussion management was agreed across all sports for implementation at grassroots and amateur level. Scotland is the first country to implement this action and should be heartily congratulated for doing so.

One of the key recommendations of the Oireachtas report on concussion published in December 2014 was that there should be a single consistent message across all sports in this area. It would be wonderful if we could follow the example of Scotland. – Yours, etc,

CLIFF BEIRNE,
