Speeding on our motorways

Madam, – I recently drove from south Cavan to south Wexford, mostly on motorway, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. However, on my return, following the same route, it struck me that in the entire round trip of something approaching 400km, I never once noticed any police presence.

On occasions too numerous to quantify, despite driving at the maximum speed of 120km/h, I was overtaken by cars travelling much faster. Indeed some of them appeared to be travelling well in excess of the limit.

The question arises as to whether the limits are too low on our new motorways, or whether the gardaí have abandoned them to the tender mercies of those who observe no restrictions whatsoever. This is not to mention the absence of any rest or refreshment areas on the network between Rosslare and Kells, Co Meath. For a ha’porth of tar the ship was lost. – Yours, etc,

ANDY JONES,

Mullagh, Co Cavan.
