Sir, - Wednesday's horrific crash on the Chapelizod bypass illustrated not only the dangers of trespass on motorways, whether by animals or poeple, on motorways but also the even greater foolishness of building motorways without the elementary protection of continuous Armco barriers along the central reservation.

Had barriers been in place in this instance, the incident might well have been less serious. When will the roads authorities wake up to what has been obvious elsewhere: that continuous barriers are needed not just at bridges and grade differences, or even just on bends, but wherever there is the potential for a cross-over collision?

Time for a retrofit as was done in the UK in the past - or are we waiting for the big one? - Yours, etc.,
