Sir, - Your May 1st article by reporter Katherine Wilton stated: "Gen de Chastelain was the Canadian military's chief of the defence staff during the peacekeeping trip (of the Canadian Airborne Regiment) to Somalia."
The regiment went to Somalia at the end of December 1992 and returned to Canada in July 1993. The incidents in Somalia referred to in the article occurred in February/March 1993.
I was appointed Canada's ambassador to the United States on January 5th, 1993 and filled that position until January 1994, the Prime Minister having requested that I return to active duty and re assume the appointment of Chief of the Defence Staff. - Yours, etc.,
