Sir, – There is widespread dismay at the shortage of greens in our supermarkets due to bad weather in Spain (February 4th).
Perhaps this is a wake-up call for us all to move away from our reliance on imported food items that we can very well produce ourselves here in Ireland.
Those of us who are involved in the Grow-It-Yourself movement can simply step out to our gardens or patios and pick the salad greens, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli and leeks that grow so well at this time of year in this climate. Food miles: zero.
As for courgettes and aubergines, the concept of seasonal eating means waiting and enjoying these when their turn comes in the summer.

The excuses of lack of time or lack of space really don’t stand up.
A lot can be produced in a remarkably small space with a minimal input of time. Lack of know-how is also cited, but support for those who want to get growing is widely available. – Yours, etc,
