Securing a place in secondary school

Sir, – I write with regard to your recent article about the shortage of secondary school places in south Kildare and the plight of a family struggling to secure a place for a child ("I don't want to uproot my kids just to get a secondary school place", Student Hub, August 9th). It was a chilling read as I know that that could be my child and our family in 2019, but in another place, Kildare town.

How can any government that puts in place a plan for primary education that includes two new primary schools for a town fail to project eight years forward and put in a secondary school plan for those very same children?

I would encourage all parents not to assume that there are enough second-level places for their children locally just because there are primary places.

Unfortunately, history has repeatedly taught us that mathematics is not our Government’s strongest point. – Yours, etc,
