Madam, - I fully support your Editorial of August 18th seeking more recognition for science in our schools and universities. However, your paper unfortunately betrays society's real attitudes to careers in your list of famous alumni of the various colleges in the Options 2008 supplement published in the same edition.
This includes 24 sportsmen and women, nine politicians, 11 writers, 12 radio and TV presenters, five assorted actors, two chefs, and a few lonely outriders from other areas.
I could identify only eight with a possible science connection. I also wonder what is happening in Sligo IT, as it has no celebrity alumni. The Minister must be asked. - Yours, etc,
