Scaring ourselves to death

Sir, – I too am worried about the unfiltered deluge of harrowing news that comes to us instantly these days via social media and our phones (Opinion, "Scaring ourselves to death every day of the week", June 29th).

I’m intrigued by the debate being held in the French media landscape as to how to cover attacks such as the ones in Nice or in Normandy.

Irish media should consider the glorifying effects of covering the front page with a killer’s portrait and his “story”.

Meanwhile the victims are reduced, perversely, to a statistic.

While I am in no way an advocate of Orwellian censorship, I believe the media can aspire to a more balanced approach.

Here and elsewhere we would do well to debate and re-evaluate current coverage of criminals/terrorists in the media.– Yours, etc,
