Responsible access to countryside

A chara, – I agree with your editorial (August 25th) that the success of this new rural development plan depends on job creation.

The most valuable resource in rural Ireland, in my view, is our beautiful, unspoilt, natural and varied countryside. This has huge potential for rural tourism development. The “elephant in the room”, of course, is that unlike other developed countries, we do not have a regulated scheme of reasonable and responsible access to our countryside.

At least let’s debate this important issue. Rural communities themselves, and local businesses, would be the main beneficiaries. What are we afraid of? – Is mise,
