Replying to job applications

Sir, – Declan Carty (November 20th) laments the failure on the part of prospective employers to inform a candidate that her or she has not been shortlisted for interview.

After recently taking a day off work to attend a 10-person panel interview for a senior trainee post in dermatology, I can regretfully add that this inexplicable lack of basic courtesy in an age of easy communications goes all the way to the wire, even where the number of candidates involved barely reaches double digits.

In this instance I took it as a welcome reminder of how hospitals and many senior colleagues choose to treat trainee doctors in this country. For all the talk of salaries, and so on, to keep doctors in the country, it might be worth having a look at the basics. – Yours, etc,
