Madam, - I stood, last week, in one of the barrack blocks in Auschwitz dedicated to the memory of Polish prisoners who died there during that time of unspeakable horror. As images of death and despair flickered on the walls a cantor sang from the Jewish liturgy the anthem "God the Merciful".

Here, where there was no mercy, I wondered how a people who had suffered so much could still believe in a loving creator.

Yet if there is no merciful God what was this suffering for? What was it all for? - Yours, etc.,
