Religion and hospitals

Sir, – While attending St Vincent’s private hospital in Dublin recently for a procedure that required a general anaesthetic, I was astonished to find myself in a pre-theatre holding bay with a crucifix hanging on the wall. If I had seen it in the recovery room I would have probably have put it down to a drug-induced hallucination. I kept an eye out for a statue of the Buddha while enjoying my post-op tea and toast but no luck. I thought the days of Catholic iconography in our hospitals were long gone? – Yours, etc,

JOHN LOMBARD,

Goatstown,

Dublin 14.
