Referendum on judges' pay

Sir, – As a public servant I can sympathise with the judges regarding proposed pay cuts

Sir, – As a public servant I can sympathise with the judges regarding proposed pay cuts. My salary of €59,000 has been cut to €53,000 while my yearly mortgage repayments now stand at €21,600. I’ve devised a system which I would like to share with them and should any judge wish for further information on this, please do pass on my contact details.

Briefly it goes as follows. E – Economise. X – X all meals out, except a monthly “early bird”. I – Indulge in fresh air, it’s free. S – Shop in T or A or L or D. T – Total all the current spending on an Excel spreadsheet, exclaim in amazement, then do all of the above.

I guarantee my system is good. I just know that the chief justice will be able to manage on €227,168 (down from €295,916) and even the poor High Court judge will, I contend, do nicely on €186,973 (down from €243,080).

When is that constitutional amendment taking place? – Yours, etc,
