Referendum on European treaty

Sir, – May I congratulate Eamon Gilmore on the date chosen for the referendum

Sir, – May I congratulate Eamon Gilmore on the date chosen for the referendum. As a parent whose child’s school is a polling station it appears both my son and I am, once again, to be inconvenienced by a whim.

He might like to know that said school is closed for the entirety of the preceding week; and it is not as if there weren’t a plethora of empty buildings around that could easily be used instead.

Not only does Mr Gilmore expect me to pay my household charge (despite my having paid crippling stamp duty on the now worthless millstone around my neck), I am now forced to pay for unnecessary childcare to suit his agenda, or to take leave from work.

I shall, therefore, choose the latter option and take my son somewhere nice for the day rather than participating in the otherwise worthy process of voting. – Yours, etc,

TONY BURGESS,

Sandford Avenue, Dublin 8.
