Sir, - How I laughed when I read of the Vintner Federation s hypocritical plans to launch a new nationwide campaign against what they describe as "the social cancer of drug taking and drug dealing" Given that alcohol is itself a drug, and alcoholism quite possibly the most widespread and devastating of all social cancers, one presumes that their first action in this campaign will be to close down their own pubs!
Could it be possible that the real reason for their concern lies in the fact that a growing number of people in our society are now spending their money on other (often less harmful) drugs like cannabis, rather than wasting it on their own ridiculously overpriced liquid wares? - Yours, etc.,
