President's Communion

Sir, - I am a Catholic, divorced and remarried to a member of the Church of Ireland congregation. My wife and I attend Mass or Service either in the Pro-Cathedral or St Patrick's Cathedral most Sundays.

Despite the pronouncement by the Catholic Bishops that Catholics who are divorced and remarry are not welcome at the altar rails to receive Communion (in contrast the Dean of St Patrick's immediately before Communion announces that all are welcome to receive the Eucharist), I have continued to do so with my wife at each of these altars. I feel very happy when I receive Communion.

I believe it is Communion with Christ, and I do not feel the need for approval from any mortal representing one section of the Christian Church. I object to Dr Connell describing my Communion in St Patrick's Cathedral as "a sham" and I sincerely hope that our President treats the bigoted pronouncements of our Catholic Hierarchy with the contempt they deserve.

I put these simple questions to my archbishop: should I go to the alter rails to receive Communion on Christmas morning? Where? - Yours, etc.,
