Sir, – May we presume Eamon Gilmore (“Tánaiste forecasts economic recovery by end of year”, Front Page, January 2nd) has borrowed the Minister for Health’s “logistical, logarithmic progression” algorithm to project turnaround in the economy. Reading tea leaves is such a rare art! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – On the same day that Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore expressed optimism that we will be out of recession by the end of 2013, Dr Eddie Molloy (Opinion & Analysis, December 31st) delivered a bleak assessment of the ability to achieve real change in public sector organisation and service delivery.

Hopefully, the Tánaiste will be proven right in his assessment, which must also act as a strong wake-up call to Government that 2013 must be the year of radical change.

For if we cannot achieve meaningful public sector reform during the biggest economic crisis ever faced by this Republic, we will never achieve that change once the crisis has passed. – Yours, etc,
