'POWER TO CHANGE'

DEIRDRE HENCHY,

DEIRDRE HENCHY,

Sir, - I write to correct the statement in the letter from Sister Paulinus O'Connor (September 26th) about the Power to Change advertisements and the advertising of alcoholic spirits. RTÉ does not accept advertisements for "hard" liquor products.

Since 1967, RTÉ has had a code of standards governing the advertising of other alcohol. The RTÉ code has been strengthened and is constantly reviewed to ensure the promotion of alcohol products, especially of those brands directed at young people, is handled responsibly.

We are not permitted under broadcasting legislation to carry advertising directed towards religious or political ends. The legal opinion received by both RTÉ and the Independent Broadcasting Commission indicated that the Power to Change advertisements did not conform to the law. RTÉ is willing to carry advertisements for religious publications or events provided those advertisements meet the statutory requirements as laid down by the Broadcasting Acts. - Yours etc.,

Sir, - How odd that in a country where the Trinity is part of our Constitution, the State broadcaster is precluded from accepting advertisements which have the backing of the Christian churches, yet has no difficulty advertising "Psychics Live"! - Yours etc,
