Political apologies

Sir, – Ivana Bacik's apology is puzzling ("Bacik apologises for attendance at Merrion Hotel event", News, August 8th).

Given that she understood the event attended was “within regulations”, what misdeed occurred? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – A valid apology involves taking responsibility for one’s role in situation or event, expressing regret, asking forgiveness and promising it won’t happen again. It is neither easy nor simple. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I wish to apologise most sincerely (and unreservedly) for my non-attendance at an event in the Merrion Hotel.

Had I been in attendance, I would be in a position to apologise for my attendance but now I find I must apologise for the fact that my non-attendance means that I am unable to apologise (unreservedly) for my actual attendance.

In future I will seek to ensure that I will be in attendance at events which require post-attendance apologies. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – Another politician has expressed regret for attending a party which was “within the regulations”. The people of this country have shown admirable fortitude in complying with unprecedented restrictions to their human rights, baffling guidelines, and new laws, in an effort to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic. May I commend them for their valiant efforts in the face of a poor example from our politicians who were elected to lead us and guide us.

May I just say, God save us and guard us! – Is mise,

A chara, – Ivana Bacik has apologised to her party leader for attending the Merrion bash, apparently showing that it’s possible to be simultaneously left and gauche. – Is mise,
