Sir, - In recent weeks several commentators have bemoaned the lack of clarity in the public domain about the meaning and implications of pluralism.

Your readers may be interested to learn that a two year research project on pluralism has been underway among members of the departments of philosophy and politics, UCD, since October 1995. Other participants in the project include scholars from TCD and a number of visitors from other Irish universities and from abroad.

We are examining both theoretical issues and their practical, social and political consequences. We hope that our research will bring an additional dimension to public discussion as well as academic teaching of this important topic. The outcome of our research will be published.

Some readers may be interested also in the discussions of pluralism by Irish and international scholars sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy in Coleraine last year. These are to be published by Cambridge University Press, Spring 1996, as Philosophy and Pluralism, ed. Dave Archard. - Yours, etc.,
