Sir, - If the millennium spike ever gets the go-ahead, it might best serve as the appropriate standard from which to fly one of our many unwanted plastic bags to symbolise Dublin as Europe's dirtiest capital city and the contempt of a significant portion of the nation's population for civic considerations and the merits of effective recycling.
Alternatively, one could opt to fly a brown paper bag to symbolise the type of briefcase apparently still much favoured within some circles in Irish society.
