Paying for bank redundancies

Sir, – As a once well-paid employee of a private company in the construction sector I was made redundant

Sir, – As a once well-paid employee of a private company in the construction sector I was made redundant. My redundancy payment – statutory minimum – two weeks per year plus one week’s pay, all capped at €600 per week. After months of unemployment I was fortunate to find an alternative job but at approximately half of my former salary. My former employers did what needed to be done, and have managed to keep their business going without any outside help.

Having paid for this crisis with my job, and higher taxes to pay for the bank bailouts, now I guess I’ll pay again for the superior redundancies packages of insolvent bankers. Having been in their shoes, I don’t envy those unfortunate to be let go from any job, but I certainly do envy their terms from the bank. – Yours, etc,
