Madam, – I was astonished to read (“Sports event list not to be amended”, Home News, May 4th) that racing at Cheltenham will not be available to free-to-air television viewers on the grounds that it takes place in another jurisdiction.

The Cheltenham Racing Festival is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar year and is almost thought of as an international meeting between Ireland and the UK. It is also one of the few sporting events where Irish participants do extremely well.

I would like to call on the Minister for Communications to reconsider his decision in view of the huge popularity of this event. – Yours, etc,
