Parking in cycle lanes

Sir, – One reason why motorists get away with parking in cycle lanes is that there is a shortage of traffic wardens to enforce the law.

However there is no shortage of citizens with smartphones. Why then does the Government not make a small change to the law and employ some enterprising nerd to write an app which would enable an irate biker to stop, take a picture (including the number plate) of an offending vehicle and transmit it, together with the date, time and GPS location, to a Garda confidential number? A fine could then be issued automatically to the vehicle’s registered owner.

One drawback might be dealing with an initial surge of such reports, but one feels, for obvious reasons, that this would subside fairly quickly. – Yours, etc,

FRANK E BANNISTER,
