Sir, - As a resident of Chapelizod, I am distressed at the shocking pollution of the Liffey caused by the collision on the N4 on Thursday. Chapelizod is suffering most due to the decision to block the flow of oil further to the east. The damage to the ecology of the area is already shocking. Fish stock have been killed off; many ducks, geese, and other birds have been affected, and it is not at all clear what other effects we will experience.
We badly need politicians and others to ensure that insurance money from the oil company and others involved be correctly channelled into regeneration and that adequate environmental studies are carried out to evaluate the damage and what needs to be done.
I am not at all convinced that Dublin Corporation's record in handling this sort of incident in the past passes muster. - Yours, etc.,
