Sir, - Families raising children with severe mental and physical disabilities are under enormous pressure, some almost at breaking point. When their child reaches teenage years these problems become even greater; for example, lifting up and down stairs, bathing, getting out of the house.

Occupational therapy services are an essential part of the support system these families depend on. Following detailed assessment, these problems can be overcome by providing solutions; for example, in housing adaptations, special equipment wheelchairs, hoists and bath lifts, while considering the long term needs of the whole family. Dealing with practical issues allows the family to have a life, giving hope for the future.

On April 21st 3,000 health professionals are due to strike. Occupational therapists, vital to Ireland's health care system, are part of this group. We request support from the public at large for our predicament.

Occupational therapy is a profession which requires four years' intensive training, and yet our pay scales are derisory. Young occupational therapy graduates, having completed their honours degree, are being enticed abroad. They emigrate to the US and Australia to receive recognition for the work they do meanwhile, occupational therapy positions in Ireland cannot be filled. This exodus is likely to intensify if the Government continues to ignore our just request for acceptable working conditions. - Yours, etc.,
