Madam, - A lovely weekend in Dublin has been disgracefully polluted, once again, by the unendurable noise of those intruder alarms that go off at all hours because of a puff of wind, or very often for no discernible reason at all.

It is well past time for the people who own and operate these devices be regarded as the bad neighbours that they are. If the Government were serious about both the comfort of the population at large and the genuine security of properties that need to have alarms fitted it would outlaw sound-only alarms and insist that all alarms are of the silent, monitored variety. - Yours, etc,
