Sir, - I wish to object to David Norris's abuse of his position in the Seanad and of taxpayers' money with his proposal to have Dublin Corporation install gates at the junction of Parnell Street and North Great George's Street. Senator Norris is a person who espouses inclusiveness, tolerance and equality, yet in this proposal we see the very opposite: exclusion, non-acceptance and elitism.

Being a Senator imposes obligations. The propagation of this socially dangerous policy is hardly in keeping with these obligations. Is this a trend in Dublin for the future?

The way to curtail so-called joy-riders in other communities is by using speed ramps, not by eliminating a public highway. I find it amusing that Dublin Corporation can find £70,000 for this elitist project when other communities are unable to have potholes repaired because of budget restrictions.

I hope the citizens of Dublin will oppose this application. - Yours, etc.,
