Sir, - The unequivocal No to Nice delivered by the Irish people will be regarded in time as a watershed in Irish and European political life. The arrogance of the EU in its immediate ruling out of renegotiation is just as galling as the gloating of the many varied No campaigns who won the day.
As one who voted Yes, I applaud the fact that our Government led the only democracy in Europe that permitted its people the right to veto this treaty.
What is now required is a clear European peoples referendum on where the EU is going - delving into issues of politics, defence, social policy and economics. Such a poll is long overdue and our Government now has a mandate and a duty to insist that it is done. - Yours, etc.,
