Sir, - Politicians should remember that the electorate will vote having regard not only to promises for the future but to past performance. Many of us who have supported the concept of closer European integration in the past referendums have been disappointed by the failure of previous governments to implement the policies endorsed and the promises made.

I refer in particular to the failure to implement the Schwengen Agreement on freedom of travel throughout the Union. We are reminded of this by having to produce passports every time we leave this country, enter another within the Union and again when we return home.

The failure to deliver on the promises made in this and other areas make me disinclined to vote in favour of what may be more pious aspirations, and if it were not for the other referendums involved I would be tempted to register my protest by staying at home. - Yours, etc.,
