New light on the Reformation

Sir, – Rev Dr Henry Martin ("Protestantism and Catholicism, whither the twain?", Rite & Reason, July 21st) casts interesting fresh light on Catholic/Protestant antecedents – speculating that the Reformation wasn't about God at all, but about human beings and the status of their material or bodily being.

He postulates, too, that “debates about the human soul or even spirit tend now to be seen as arcane and relatively harmless pastimes”.

Those of us of atheist/humanist persuasion won’t quarrel with any of this, even if we come at it from a different angle. – Yours, etc,

OWEN MORTON,
