MONITORING RADIATION

Sir, - The recent announcement by Met Eireann, that ultra violet radiation would be monitored is to be welcomed. Ultra violet radiation to the earth has increased because of the depletion of the ozone layer and with it, an increased risk of skin cancer.

We also need a national asthma register to determine in some small way the health effects of living close to polluting industries.

We question the proliferation of MMDS stations and mobile telephone systems using non ionising radiation, in view of the lack of an independent monitoring system and the growing disquiet at the long term effects of exposure to such radiation.

We also note that infectious diseases are forecast to spread because of global warming. in short, economic activity cannot be sustainable when it damages the environment and causes ill health.
