Migrants and fishing industry

A chara, – Government sources have "stressed" that its proposals to deal with the abuse of illegal immigrants in the fishing industry do "not amount to an amnesty" ("Visa plan to protect migrants on trawlers", November 12th).

What else can you call it? Skippers will not be punished, illegal migrants will be let stay and put on a citizenship track, and more migrants will be taken on from around the world, in consultation with the fishing industry. This method of getting workers from outside Europe will, the source promised, be “widened” to include other sectors where pay and conditions are too dismal for Irish and EU workers. Not a word is said by this Government about making working pay and conditions in these sectors more attractive. – Is mise,
