A chara, - Sadbh (Loose Leaves, June 19th) refers to the Mayo Day at Trinity College when Paul Durcan was appointed Ireland Professor of Poetry.
She mentions that the poet's father and mother were born in Mayo and that the chancellor of the University of Dublin is a Ballina woman. She might have added that the provost of Trinity is a Mayo man, as was his immediate predecessor.
In the light of all that, as the man said, should I mention that we could yet, in the not too distant future, have a government in which the Taoiseach and Tánaiste would both be natives of that county.
