Sir, – May I confirm the view of the masters of the three Dublin maternity hospitals (Letters, May 2nd), that the 260-year-old mastership model is the most appropriate form of governance for tertiary maternity and neonatal services.
Having practised medicine in six countries in three continents, I can confidently say that the best-run hospitals I came across were the Dublin maternity hospitals. The secret of their success was simple.
Everyone knew where the buck stopped: with the master.
