Sir, - Just as we try to come to terms with the premature release of Garda killers meant to serve 40 years' imprisonment, another brave bunch of "patriots" decides to butcher men, women and infants in Omagh.

Of course, there is a lot of loud talk from politicians about apprehending this latest group of serial killers and their henchmen. But even if they are all caught, tried, convicted and sentenced, for how long will they actually stay locked up? How soon will it be before the same politicians offer them an amnesty as "political prisoners"?

Where, in all of this, is the disincentive for those contemplating barbarous acts in pursuit of a warped agenda? And who will guarantee an "amnesty" for the bereaved, the maimed and the ordinary people who now appear permanently hostage to the whims of a cruel and evil minority on this island? - Yours, etc., Ray Cass,
