Sir, - I would like to nominate my home town of Limerick as European City of Litter for the remainder of the year.
Visitors to Limerick cannot help but be impressed by our outstanding littering tradition which goes back decades. They will be astounded to discover that it is impossible to walk more than a few yards in the city without uncovering evidence of our profound love of littering. No pathway, riverbank, car park or railway track in our town is immune from our favourite pastime of tossing any unwanted rubbish from our hands. Visitors and/or county councils and corporations who wish to dump their litter in Limerick will be delighted to discover that they can do so with impunity as the chances of being reprimanded by a litter warden are as remote as a cuckoo being heard at Christmas. - Yours, etc.,
