Sir, – Missing from Fionnuala Mulcahy’s article (“A year of Letters to the Editor”, December 31st) was any mention of those (the vast majority) who never make it to that glorious centre-page space, The Irish Times receiving, as we know, “a great many letters” for which space is found for only “a small selection”. Let tribute be paid then for once to all the “mute inglorious” letter-writers whose voice is never or very rarely heard in this forum and who nevertheless keep on trying.

What’s left? Comment online? Write with fountain pen? Buy an iPhone and dash off letters from it? In a more relaxed style, write currente calamo with the odd Latin word thrown in for effect? Some of the hard choices to be made as part of our new year resolutions. – Yours, etc,
