Sir, - In launching his campaign for the leadership of the Labour Party, Mr Brendan Howlin said his aim was "to put together an alternative in the value systems of Labour"(The Irish Times, September 11th).

In a previous administration with Fianna Fáil, the Labour Party, when asked to choose between "the value systems of Labour" and political expediency, voted to endorse the tax amnesty which legitimised the behaviour of those who had plundered and cheated the coffers of this State for years.
