Madam, - Whether one agrees or disagrees with Pat Rabbit's strategy in relation to the next general election (John Waters, Opinion, May 23rd), it is clear what his position is. Contrast that with the position of the former Labour leader Dick Spring in the election of 1992. He was perceived to have adopted one stance during the campaign and another after the election. That damaged his reputation.
It contributes to a healthy democracy if the electorate know where politicians stand. We can then all agree or disagree as we see fit. In the long run that is more important than if they are right or wrong. - Yours, etc,
