Sir, – Eric Luke’s photograph (Home News, March 5th) must rank as an iconic graphic, representation of the abject failure of the Irish political system during the Tiger years to place the lives of its citizens over its subservience to the worst excesses of the capitalist economic model.

The long queues outside the Working Abroad Expo at RDS Simmonscourt in Dublin over the weekend might bring relief to our cynical politicians, as social welfare payments and hospital trolleys will be less in demand, but in reality this further forced emigration of around 12,000 people who queued for hours shows a further haemorrhaging of the lifeblood of our nation.

It seems that an acceptable Irish solution to our continual dire economic woes is the emigration and exile of our people, while the rich further enrich themselves. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The day this nation is on the path to recovery is when I see pictures from Dublin’s RDS showing the queues at a jobs expo to be full of out-of-work boom- time politicians, State-supported hacks and camp followers; with an ard fheis packed with young and old, full of enthusiasm for a renewed Irish Republic. – Yours, etc,
