Irregular plurals

Sir, – Mattie Lennon's query as to whether it's two mice or a pair of mouses he has for his PC and laptop (September 8th) brings to mind the Kerry tailor long ago who faced a similar predicament. He needed two new smoothing irons from Dublin. The type used by tailors was called a tailor's goose, but should the plural be geese or gooses? To avoid being seen as an ignoramus by someone in Dublin, he wrote a letter ordering one tailor's goose but added in a postscript: since you're sending one, you might as well send me another one too. – Yours, etc,
