Sir, - I am currently researching the history of tennis in Ireland since it was first played here over 125 years ago. It arrived primarily through the gentry and, was described, correctly, as a "Favourite pastime among the Upper Circle" (Leitrim Advertiser, May 1900). At one time the Fitzwilliam Championships (Irish Open), first held in 1879, were on a par with Wimbledon and Ireland produced some of the best players in the world.

I am hoping to compile an Irish tennis story dealing with some of our earlier greats and with the social side of the game, particularly at club level. Any interesting stories, press cuttings, etc. from times past would be welcome. I am keen to establish the formation dates for all Irish clubs (presently thriving or nearly forgotten) and how they came into existence. More expansive details on the clubs in the north-western counties would be appreciated. - Yours, etc.
