Madam, - Throughout Europe and America Commemoration Ceremonies are taking place to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day and to honour those who died to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany.

It is estimated that 66,000 Irishmen took part in D-Day, a substantial number of whom were killed or injured. Successive Irish governments have refused to recognise the sacrifices made to insure Europe's freedom and have effectively airbrushed these brave men from Irish history.

It is ironic that D-Day commemorations are taking place during the European elections. The freedom to participate in elections came about as a result of the patriotism and heroism shown by the people who fought to free Europe.

We owe everything to the brave men who fought on D-Day and we have given them nothing in return. - Yours, etc.,
