Ireland and the Brexit debate

Sir, – Pat Burke believes the Brexit decision "will be taken in England, as that is where the bulk of the British population lives" (April 19th).

I am not so sure about that. A strong majority in England – for example a margin of 60/40 – would indeed render the results in other parts of the UK irrelevant. However, if the “Leave” vote is 51-52 per cent in England, but only 35-40 per cent elsewhere, the “Remain” side could win.

Such an outcome is quite plausible, given the strong support for continued EU membership in Scotland, in particular. – Yours, etc,
