Halting Sites

Sir, - I agree with the points raised by Cllr Richard Greene regarding halting site policy (June 17th). I wonder why Mr Bobby Molloy, Junior Minister in charge of traveller accommodation, has reneged on his party's commitment in their election policy document to bring halting sites under the normal planning process, i.e. with right of appeal to An Bord Pleanala?

The widespread opposition to halting sites in residential areas is not, as Government and Local Authorities continually state, an anti-traveller question. It is an environmental issue. It is widely held that a caravan park in a residential area, whether for travellers or for holidaymakers, is not consistent with proper planning and development. I therefore would ask Bobby Molloy and the PDs, who consistently adopt the high moral ground, to keep their promise, as stated in their election document, to allow the settled community to exercise their democratic right of appeal to An Bord Pleanala. This in my view would be Progressive Democracy. - Yours, etc., Eamonn Murphy,

Rathfarnham,

Dublin 14.
