GROWTH OF DUBLIN PORT

Sir, - Your correspondent, J

Sir, - Your correspondent, J. O'Flaherty (August 12th) rightly raises the spectre of the creeping destruction of Dublin Bay by the proposed infill of a further 52 acres by the Dublin Port Company. Where is this appropriation of our valued bay amenity going to end? Just like Oliver Twist, they keep coming back for more.

Since 1966, approximately 470 acres of land have already been infilled by Dublin Port. At their "information roadshow" in Clontarf Castle last June I was told by company executives that the additional 52 acres would meet their requirements for the next 15 years. So, I asked, should I now be alerting my grandchildren that by the year 2017, they will be preparing to oppose the port authority, who will then, perhaps, be seeking a further 104 acres? The representative of the Dublin Port Company just smiled but did not comment. - Yours, etc.,
