Madam, – What a sight it was to behold: the archaeologists, many of whom were volunteers, sipping rock shandy at Bective Cross after their dig throughout the month of July (“Dig reveals secrets of ‘green’ monks,” August 4th).

They who so lovingly and carefully have unearthed the “green agenda” of the ancient clever monks of Bective Abbey must surely shake their heads in wonder how EirGrid’s proposals to build giant pylons and high voltage power lines which would literally pass by the fields of the ancient abbey and near the Boyne could be approved.

The clever Cistercian Monks at Bective Abbey, founded in 1147, the second-oldest foundation in Ireland would also shake their heads that after almost 900 years we could let this happen and not look to our European counterparts at the clever option of putting these giant ugly pylons underground. – Yours, etc,
