Sir, – As is right for any member of the media, Noel Whelan takes the new Government to task for its “spin” (“New Government seems to be under the spell of spin”, Opinion & Analysis, May 13th).
The “spin” in this case was the prominence that the various Ministers were given in a photograph before the new Ministers entered the Dáil for the first time.
A much more fundamental spin with much more serious consequences went on for years during the decade before the 2009-2010 crash. That was the spin that all in the garden was rosy and that there could be no downside to the decisions that were being taken by the most powerful citizens in charge of government and financial institutions at that time.
That spin was not alone not challenged, it was supported by most of media and academia.
So keep up the good work, Noel Whelan, and challenge the spin in all its forms. – Yours, etc,
